ALBUFEIRA · PORTUGAL
Sea caves, golden cliffs, the bright south of Portugal.
Boat days along the Algarve coast. Benagil and the sea caves, dolphin pods offshore, jeep safaris up to Monchique, and the hill villages and vineyards behind the cliffs.
Only on the Algarve
Three things you can’t do anywhere else.
Sunshine, sand and seafood are everywhere on a holiday coast. These three aren’t. The cave, the cliffs, the pods. Each one is specific to this strip of southern Portugal. Plan the rest of the trip around them.
Into the cliff
The Benagil Sea Cave
Carved by Atlantic swell into a high domed chamber with a circular skylight punched through the ceiling and a private sand floor inside. The most photographed cave in Portugal sits 30 minutes by boat from Albufeira. Catamaran, kayak, paddleboard or semi-rigid speedboat — the chamber holds them all.

Along the cliffs
The Golden Coast
The stretch of coast between Albufeira and Lagos is a geological one-off — soft ochre sandstone the Atlantic has carved into arches, stacks, hidden coves and offshore islets. Catamarans, Portuguese tall ships and speedboats run the route every day from the marina. Every cove looks like the next holiday brochure.

Offshore
Atlantic Dolphin Pods
Resident bottlenose pods follow the warm Gulf Stream water past Albufeira year-round. Common and striped dolphins join in summer. Most operators run a sightings-guarantee — no dolphins on the day, second trip is free. They usually show.

The boat day
Start with the one that everyone books.
If you’ve only got one day in Albufeira, this is the one. The cliffside cruise the whole stretch of coast is built around.
The classics
Albufeira’s Most Popular Day Tours
Benagil sea cave, dolphin pods, catamaran cruises, jeep safaris into the hills. The day trips most travellers book first.
Across the Algarve
Pick a direction from Albufeira.
Albufeira sits in the middle of the coast. Old Town for the cobbles and the harbour. West for the Lagos cliffs. Inland for the Moorish castle at Silves and the hills above Monchique. East for the quieter beaches and Faro’s saltflats.
By tour type
Or pick how you want to spend the day.
Catamaran if you want the long lunch. Speedboat for the caves. Jeep if you want the mountains. Wine and tapas, dolphin watching, kayak under the cliffs, tuk-tuk through the Old Town, and the rest.
The Algarve Icon
The Benagil Sea Cave.
A vaulted dome with a sand floor and a circular hole in the cliff above. Atlantic swell did the carving. Thirty minutes by boat from Albufeira. The most photographed cave in Portugal.
The cliffs by sea
If the coast is the reason you came.
The Algarve cliffs are a different animal from the water. Catamarans, speedboats and tall ships running the route between Albufeira and Lagos every day. If we had to pick three boats, these are the ones we’d book first.
The last hour of light
When the cliffs catch the gold.
Albufeira faces almost dead south, so the sun crosses the bow rather than sinks behind it. The sandstone turns the colour of a peach for forty minutes. Our three favourites for that window.
Wine and the table
The Algarve eats slowly.
Cataplana on a tiled terrace, fresh-grilled sardines off a Praia dos Pescadores boat, vinho verde from the old Moorish vineyards above Silves. Three picks for the half-day you give to the food.
When you’ve had enough boats
The inland half-days.
Cork groves, citrus farms, hill villages and the Moorish castle at Silves. Jeeps and quad bikes off the asphalt into the back country. Three picks for when your shoulders need a break from the salt.
